Things change quickly in the transfer portal. Michigan football fans learned that over the weekend as Terrance Brooks went from a top target to an Illinois commitment.

The Wolverines needed a cornerback and now, it doesn’t feel like there is one to be had. The staff can scour the transfer portal in search of a corner, but I have a feeling they would have made contact already if there was one of interest.

At any rate, defensive line depth is also on the to-do list for Michigan football in the transfer portal and Jay’viar Suggs is the only target on the board. The 6-foot-3, 282-pound defensive tackle is from D-2 Grand Valley State.

Suggs is a Michigan native. He also had five sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss last season. He would be the perfect No. 4 to go along with Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant, and Rayshaun Benny. Suggs also has two years of eligibility so he could help beyond the 2024 season.

Where Michigan football stands with Jay’viar Suggs

According to Pete Nakos of On3.com, Michigan football was the “favorite” after its visit last week. The Wolverines made the top six and then, the top four. However, Nakos also reports that Suggs is on a multi-day visit to LSU right now.

The Tigers are desperate for defensive tackle help — much more so than the Wolverines. I’m sure they will throw as much NIL money as they can at Suggs, but if he’s focused on fit, development, and his NFL future, Michigan football should be the choice. If he leaves Baton Rouge without a commitment that will a good sign.

Stay tuned.
